In this episode of Unique Careers, Unique Lives (my new podcast – YAY!) I talked with my friend Mihaela Udrea a.k.a. MihaPower about her story.
Mihaela is the strongest person I know. She is a role model to me in many aspects, but mostly in her always saying the truth, doing what is right and having discipline.
Why should you listen to this episode
Mihaela is a fitness trainer, but she wasn’t always one. She used to work in a corporate job, which crushed her soul because it was against her values. She knew she could not continue anymore. But before she could change to something new, an important thing happened in her life.
This episode is interesting for you if you are considering changing your career and don’t know how to move forward or you know how to move forward and don’t take (enough) action. It is also for you if you feel you need more discipline in your life. If you like real life stories, you will love this episode regardless of what is going on in your life.
The Key Messages I Took Away
Mihaela shared a lot of wisdom in this episode. When I asked her “Who are you?” She told me :
It is not who you are but who you want to become that is important.”MihaPower
You need to think what your values are, what impact you want to create in your life and just take action.
An important question she asked herself was “What do I enjoy and what have I never given up?”. She had many options for career change and she had her childhood dreams. And most of those dreams were killed, except one. She never gave up that one thing in her life, which is sports.
Taking action might be difficult in the beginning, especially if you share your ideas with other people when they are fresh and fragile, people can tell you that it will not work. Mihaela said “If they can’t do it themselves, they tell you you can’t do it .”
The best way for her to progress was throw herself to the lions’ cage, do the actual job and learn by doing.
When she started doing the work she saw that it was a bit different than what she expected. There are things she did not like as in any job. But she chose that flavour of her Shit Sandwich (we pay our respect to Mark Manson , a writer we both love). I asked her if it was possible to plan for these difficulties in advance. She said “You can’t plan that much that you can avoid anything. You might as well not try doing it.“
It would be impossible hosting Mihaela and not talk about sports. Sports was her safe place and she can’t think a life without sports. But the biggest role of sport is teaching you discipline.
It (sports) teaches you that it is okay to feel in a certain way but you still do the right thing. ….. That is what sports is about. Doing the right thing even when you don’t feel like doing it.MihaPower
She emphasised how important it is to move. Because our bodies are made to move. It doesn’t matter what kind of sport you do, just move. You can’t say you hate moving because then it would mean you hate life. Because movement is life.
And life is movement.
So let’s move. Let’s find what we love doing, be it in sports and in our careers and take action to do it more!
